About Porchlight

A free web app for remembering a pet who has died.

When a pet dies, a lot of people say the same thing: they keep expecting them at the door. Porchlight is a place to keep a light on for them. You hang a lantern on a quiet hill at night, with their name, a photo and a letter, and you can come back to it whenever you like.

Open Porchlight

How it works

1. Hang a lantern

Pick dog, cat or another pet, choose their coat color, and add their name, years, a photo and a letter. It's free and you don't need an account. The light inside the lantern is theirs, and it doesn't go out.

2. Light a candle

The table beside each lantern holds up to 10 candles. Each one burns for 7 days and makes the lantern a little brighter while it does.

3. Visit other lanterns

Walk the hill, read the names, and leave a flower. Visit on three days in a row and you can light a candle for someone else's pet for free.

4. Look up

Every pet on Porchlight has a star in the sky above the hills. Tap "See the star" on any lantern to find it.

What's free and what's paid

Hanging a lantern, adding a photo and a letter, leaving flowers and visiting other lanterns are free. Three optional items are sold inside the app and paid once. See the pricing page for details.

Nothing renews, and there are no physical goods.

Where things stand

Porchlight is in beta. Lanterns are shared, so everyone who visits a hill sees the lanterns hung there. Some of the people walking on the hills are still simulated so the hills don't feel empty, and lanterns marked "Example" are samples. Paid items open once our payment provider has approved the account.
